The Roadmap to (Insert Good Feeling Here)
Depending on your level of comfort with adventure, the idea of wandering through an unfamiliar place with no map, no compass, and no general idea of where you’re trying to arrive might sound like something new and exciting. It could be bit anxiety-inducing or nerve-wracking. Chances are for most, it sounds like a literal nightmare. It certainly does for me.
Yet, you would be amazed at how many business owners show up day in, day out, to work with no real idea of where they’re trying to go. There are vague ideas of profit goals or revenue targets, but there generally is no thought beyond this month or perhaps this year. And if that’s not anxiety-inducing, I don’t know what is!
Question: are you wandering around without a clue as to where you’re headed, dragging your business, your employees, your clients, and your family with you?
Follow up to my previous question: does that scare the gingersnaps out of you?
“If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you’ve arrived?”
This is where The Roadmap comes into play. It is the actual path to where your business is today and where you want it to be 10 years from now, with every important step broken down in between. Simply put, it is your business plan and the vision for what you’re building. It offers clarity for what is a priority today and what becomes a priority next quarter, next year, or never at all. It holds the answers for where your focus should always be. And perhaps most importantly, it dangles that carrot out in front of you to keep going, because there’s a big, audacious goal to achieve at the end of the rainbow.
Follow up question to my follow up question: what positive emotion would you feel knowing that you have a plan for the now and the later in your business? Joy? Relief? Peace? All of the above? Get down to business on outlining your vision today, and feel those good feelings tomorrow.
